The Ngera Washing Station is nestled in the rolling hills of the Ngera region, Nyaruguru District, southern Rwanda. This washing station is located near Kibeho, one of the holy sites where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared. It is a mystical area with views extending across the border to the peaks of Burundi.
The washing station was established in 2010, and since 2020, under the operation of Simbi Coffee Company, it has been producing excellent coffee annually. Ngera coffee processes coffee cherries produced by small-scale farmers living in five hills: Ngera in Nyaruguru District, where the washing station is located, as well as the neighboring areas of Cyahinda, Rusenge, Nyagisozhi, and Gishambwe in Huye. With altitudes ranging from 1710m to a high of 2250m, the region boasts ideal conditions for coffee cherry to mature slowly over time, including cool temperatures throughout the year, stable rainfall, and well-draining, water-retentive soil. Benefiting from this microclimate, the Bourbon cherries harvested here are high in sugar content and possess vibrant, floral aromas.
